HELP! I'M USELESS AT ART

The creativity session is very light touch, playful and, to be honest, totally optional. If you carry the scars of Mrs Smith’s acerbic words about your (lack of) artistic talents when you were eight, then know this: mucking about with ink, pencils, watercolours, paper folding, tearing, and scrunching feels delicious.

When you focus on the feeling of the doing it and not the outcome, then you are in flow and feeling free. That’s what these creative experiments are about.

HOW MUCH WALKING WILL BE INVOLVED?

We will do some walking around town each day. I recommend you bring comfortable flat shoes for these sessions.

We will be strolling and stopping every 10 minutes or so in our walkshop. We may have a short walk to local restaurants.

Contact me to discuss any mobility or accessibility concerns you may have.

WHO IS CLARE BARRY, RETREAT HOST?

Clare Barry is a writer from London who writes about creativity and human connection in the digital world and London in the real one, Clare is the founder of Urban Curiosity - a wellness and creativity company that helps busy people slow down. Read more about her here and find out why Clare created Reviving Retreats here

OK, enough of writing about myself in the third person. I will lead sessions using my Urban Curiosity applied mindfulness methodology. You will learn how to reframe your digital life and get clear on what matters to you in real life. You will experiment with vision-boarding and creative practices for wellbeing. And you will discover simple ways to get in touch with your inner wisdom and listen to your intuition in the day-to-day.

Check out the testimonials on this page for others' thoughts on my approach, my teaching style and retreats.

WHO IS THE GUEST EXPERT?

Alexandra Franzen is a writer based in Portland, Oregon. She is the author of 3 books and has been featured in over 6 others, including a bestselling guide to launching a creative business.

Her writing has been featured on websites like TimeForbesNewsweekThe Huffington Post, and Lifehacker, as well as in song lyrics, on product packaging, and stenciled onto fine art paintings. She has led writing workshops in 17 cities around the world, and one of her events was named one of the "50 Best Conferences to Attend This Year" by The Muse.

Alex will teach a workshop on creating a tiny book. She defines a "tiny book" as a short, self-published project - typically 20 - 70 pages - on any topic that feels meaningful and exciting to you. It could be a collection of true stories for your kids to read when they're older. It could be a family cookbook. It could be a "how to" e-book for your clients. Alex loves showing people how to outline their book (and keep it simple!), how to brainstorm book title ideas, create time/space to work on it, and actually get it done!

Alex lives with her sweetheart Brandon (a sexy chef) and they run a pop-up brunch restaurant together on the weekends, where they host a monthly "Letters & Brunch" party for people who love croissants, bacon, and handwritten letters. You can learn more about Alexandra’s current projects at: AlexandraFranzen.com.

I love Alex because she has a beautiful warmth and the ability to 'get' your tangle of thoughts and reflect them back to you a way which makes everything seem possible. You will adore her and will have so much fun creating your tiny book.

TESTIMONIALS

Literally straight after it [the workshop], I went across the road and bought a book to fill with the ideas that flowed as a result. The next few hours were spent happily writing away in a local park in my complete element.
— Natasha Blok, multi-sensory consultant
I recently returned to the UK after a stint working in LA and Clare helped me get clear about pursuing the kind of projects that I love. I enjoyed her thoughtful approach and feel more confident about my plans for the coming year.
— Chris Miller, filmmaker and television presenter

There’s a lot to be said for giving oneself “permission” to have time away from all the routines and technological noise of everyday life to explore the inner mind a bit. I can’t recommend this retreat highly enough to anybody who wants to take some time out.
— SZ, digital publisher

Many of our participants mentioned how Clare’s talk really resonated with them and their busy lives. Several of our attendees mentioned that they left the class feeling uplifted.
— Corporate client
Having a social media meltdown? A digital burnout? One antidote is the new series of Urban Curiosity Walkshops. Hit the streets with pen and paper and, most importantly, your attention span.
— TimeOut London

Clare is such a creative dynamo. She has taught me to let go of my own control-freakery. Sometimes it takes me a while to admit that she is right (but she usually is).
